Lorry driver arrested after collision with police vehicle

A 27-year-old truck driver who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol was arrested at Otjiwarongo on Saturday, after his lorry had been involved in a collision with a police vehicle.

Police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi reported on Sunday that a lorry collided with a police pickup at Otjiwarongo at around 10h30 on Saturday.

“No person was injured during the accident. It is further alleged that shortly thereafter, the truck driver drove away from the scene but was later apprehended. Both drivers were tested for alcohol and the truck driver was above the legal alcohol limit,” Shikwambi said.

She added that both vehicles were damaged in the collision.

The driver is set to face charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless or negligent driving and attempting to defeat the course of justice.

He is expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
