Kandorozu calls for bigger Cuba contribution

National Unity Democratic Organisation parliamentarian Vetaruhe Kandorozu has called for greater Namibian contributions to Cuba, saying the N$700 000 raised so far is inadequate given its role in Namibia’s liberation struggle.

Kandorozu made the call on Saturday, arguing that Namibia should do more to support Cuba as it faces economic difficulties worsened by international sanctions.

He said the contribution was “very little” compared with the role Cuba played in Namibia’s liberation struggle and its support after independence.

“Cuba participated in Cuito Cuanavale, the last battle between Plan and South West Africa Territorial Force. Cuba assisted us with medical experts, sport and technical experts in various disciplines,” Kandorozu said.

He said Namibian businesses that benefited from the country’s liberation should now reciprocate, particularly companies in the fishing, mining, construction and pharmaceutical sectors.

“The Cuban sacrifices cannot be worth less than a million. This is indeed not a worthy Namibian gesture. We can do better,” he said.

Kandorozu proposed that the government consider donating one of its annual fishing quotas to Cuba as a once-off contribution to help the country overcome its current economic challenges.

He acknowledged Namibia’s own financial pressures, including a budget deficit and rising public debt, but said the country should still support a long-standing ally.

“Sometimes we need to sacrifice for our friend in need, who is our friend in deed. Cuba is one of those friends from the bush of Angola to the State House who never wavered,” he said.
