Sport betting company Castlebet has announced a N$300 000 sponsorship towards the Namibia Horse Racing Association’s annual horse racing event, slated for July at Rehoboth.
Namibia Horse Racing Association president Gottfried Mootu says the competition will now be greater than what it is.
“We are looking to be competitors on 11 July or even more, which is something that we have been dreaming of since we embarked on this journey in the horse racing association,” he says.
He says sport is very important and has an impact on society.
“By all means, we will try our level best to retain it in all different ranges to cascade the benefits down to everybody,” Mootu says.
Namibia Sports Commission spokesperson Givean Samulandela says the money will be used to secure a suitable track where horses can compete freely without paying rent.
“Sponsorship is very important to us and to all our supporters, especially to horse racing, where horse owners go through lengths to ensure their horses are fit and healthy,” he says.
Samulandela says the funds will assist in securing proper racing facilities.
He adds that partnerships with private sponsors are essential, particularly in the face of uncertain government funding.
“We are looking at funding volatility, and at any time, funding from the government can stop, so we need partners that can come on board and assist,” he says.
