SUNE Wittman won the gold medal in the javelin at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man on Friday.
Wittman threw a distance of 43,25 metres to finish first. She beat Carys Mansfield (39,18) of Wales and Shanica Yankey (38,08) of Dominica who finished second and third respectively.Wittman was Namibia’s only medal winner after the other athletes representing the country failed to make a mark on the Games.Shivomwene Shilongo failed to finish her 2 000m steeplechase race which was eventually won by Kenyan Norah Jeruto Tanni who finished the obstacle race in 6:28.10.In cycling, both Vera Adrian and Till Drobish failed to make an impression in all three events they were entered.In the time trial, Adrian finished 11th in the women’s event with a time of 11,14 while Drobish managed 19th in 10,09.In the women’s road race, Adrian crossed the line in 14th place in a time of 1:11.40. The race was won by Lucy Garner of England in 1:08.00.Drobish finished the men’s road race in 21st place a lap behind Australian Caleb Ewan who finished the race in 2:34.27 to get the gold medal.In the criterium, Adrian finished one lap behind winner Hanna Barnes who crossed the line in 37.26. Drobish finished 27 laps behind Australian Robert McCarthy who had a time of 57.12.Christine Briedenhann and Micaela Cloete, who represented Namibia in swimming, both failed to reach the finals in their events.On Friday, Briedenhann finished 14th and 10th in the 50m butterfly (30,03) and the 100m freestyle (58,04) respectively. Cloete finished 19th and 12th in the 100m breaststroke (1:19.33) and the 100m freestyle (1:00.47) respectively.On Saturday Cloete was 16th and 12th in the 50m freestyle (27,39) and 50 breaststroke (35,15) heats.Briedenhann did not start the 200 Individual Medley but finished 10th in the 50m freestyle with a time of 26,80.In gymnastics, the Namibian duo of Morihei Anderson and Samantha Lee Gibbons both failed to impress the judges in all their events.In the men’s qualification, Anderson finished last with 56.750 points while Gibbons finished 25th out of 28 competitors with 36.650 points in the women’s qualification.In the men’s all round, Anderson finished last with 58.600 point while Gibbons also finished last in the women’s all round with 26.700 points.
