Windhoek residents woke up early on Saturday morning to catch municipal buses to Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek, where they will witness the burial of Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma.
Among them was Emily Mbundu, a resident of Goreangab Dam, who says she woke up as early as 04h30 to secure her place on the bus.
“I wanted to make sure I don’t miss this moment. It’s important for us to show our respect and gratitude for everything our father of the nation has done for us,” Mbundu says.
At the Greenwell Matango four-way station, residents were seen rushing onto a bus designated by the City of Windhoek to transport them.
Rosalia Mutota (17), who travelled with her family, says she was saddened by the reality of saying goodbye to Nujoma.
“We are sending off our founding president today, and it’s a painful moment for the nation. But we should also be grateful for everything he has done for us,” she says.
Greenwell Matongo resident Claudia Ndapopiwa describes the occasion as historic.
“I feel honoured to witness this historic moment as our founding president is laid to rest at Heroes’ Acre,” Ndapopiwa says.
Some residents, like Katharina Shaanika (27), stayed up all night to ensure they did not miss the buses provided for the occasion.
“I didn’t want to risk oversleeping and missing this important day,” Shaanika says.
