Windhoek mayor says CBD is decaying

Windhoek mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja has described the capital’s central business district (CBD) as “decaying”.

For this reason, she says the city is planning to spend N$17 million on upgrading street lights in the CBD over the next two years.

This is part of a strategy to revive Windhoek’s city centre, the mayor says.

She was speaking during a mayoral CBD tour and stakeholder consultation in Windhoek on Tuesday.

“The upgrading of the street lights will go a long way to bring back life to the CBD, which normally dies by 18h00 on weekdays and 14h00 over weekends,” Larandja said.

She said the new street lights will comprise LED lights to ensure the efficient use of electricity.

This will enhance safety and security, she said.

“The street lights will create a safe and conducive environment for business activity,” the mayor said.
