WINDHOEK High School gave a superb performance to crush Windhoek Gymnasium 64-0 in the final U19 Super League final of the of the Metropolitan Boards Rugby Trophy in Windhoek on Saturday.
The match between the reigning champions WHS and the up and coming squad Windhoek Gymnasium had been highly anticipated and was in fact one of three matches at the finals that was contested between the two schools. But in the end, Windhoek Gymnasium’s challenge never materialised as WHS won all three the matches, while retaining their Super League trophy in record style.WHS dominated from the start – and took the lead after only two minutes when prop GD Orlam crashed over for a try, converted by Denver Murorua.From then on there was no respite as they piled on the pressure, attacking Windhoek Gymnasium at every opportunity, and at halftime the match was already over as a contest, with WHS leading 31-0.The kept up the pressure in the second half and eventually ran in 10 tries to register the biggest victory in the Super League final in the 20 years’ existence of the competition.WHS hooker and captain Gerhard Lotter had a storming game, scoring four tries, while fullback Denver Murorua scored a try and seven conversions for a haul of 19 points. The other tryscorers were locks Sven Reimers and Janco Venter, eighthman Wian Conradie and right wing Louwrens Mynhardt.WHS dominated the prize giving awards after the match with Sven Reimers being named the Forward of the Match’ Donovan Kandji the Back of the Match and Wian Conradie the Player of the Match. WHS also won the trophy for the team with the most attractive play, while Gerhard Lotter was named the Metropolitan Player of the Year.WHS dominated the finals in the various age group categories as they contested six out of the 10 finals, winning five of them.In the U19B final they beat Windhoek Gymnasium 27-14, in the Under 15A final they once again beat Windhoek Gymnasium 23-5.In the Under 19C final WHS III beat Grootfontein 25-7 and in the Under 15B final, WHS beat Tsumeb Gymnasium 13-3.The only final that WHS lost was in the Under 19D final where Augustineum beat WHS IV 22-13.The other finals saw some exciting encounters with Elnatan beating Otji Rugby 29-25 in the Super Plate final, while HTS beat Tsumeb Gymnasium 20-19 in the Under 19A final.In the Under 14A final Walvis Bay beat Windhoek Gymnasium 16-5, while HTS beat Dr Lemmer 13-3 in the Under 14B final.It was the 20th consecutive year that Metropolitan had sponsored the tournament which has grown into Namibia’s biggest schools rugby tournament.
