KWAITO artist Waka drops feel good hits with his album ‘Not For Free’.
A product of Glo Productions and Om’Lilo Records, Waka delivers a rather good kwaito album featuring the likes of Upambians, Young-T, New Turn, Drey and Mushe. This is certainly the product of hard work mashing with loads of local talent.
Track 3, ‘Maria Nepembe’, a track dedicated to the television and radio personality is quite different to the other tracks, being slower and having a more intimate and sensual feel.
Track 5, ‘Ondalilwa’, featuring Young-T, is another slower kwaito track with smooth instrumentals, perfect for a Sunday chill. Similarly, Track 8 also incorporates more mellow instrumentals to deliver more sensuality and romance.
Overall the mixing and mastering on the album has been done close to perfection, displaying a complexity and dynamism on each of the songs. Waka’s articulation and that of the other artists on the album is perfect as nobody disappears behind the veil of the music.
Primarily done in Oshiwambo, this album will go down well with its audience. As kwaito is one of the most popular and well-known genres of music in this country, it could sometimes be challenging to stay relevant and be original in a saturated industry, however I feel Waka does not have to worry too much about his album.
In a vote of thanks on his album cover, Waka said: “First and foremost, I would like to give thanks to the Almighty for the gift of life and talent. It is by His unending love and grace that I am able to serenade you with music.”
Well, thank you for the music Waka. ‘Not For Free’ certainly is a winner with me, and the audience will probably share my sentiments.
