Minister Steenkamp calls for transparency in arts fund management

Minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp says transparency in the management of arts funding is critical.

This to ensure fair and impactful support for the country’s creative sector.

Steenkamp said this during the induction of the National Arts Council of Namibia in Windhoek on Saturday, where newly appointed members were tasked with overseeing the allocation of funding.

She said resources must be allocated “in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and impactful”.

The minister said the council carries a key responsibility in managing the National Arts Fund and ensuring funding reaches artists across the country.

Steenkamp said the council must ensure opportunities reach both urban and rural artists.

The council’s role goes beyond administering funds and includes providing strategic direction and promoting inclusivity within the sector, she said.

“The creative and cultural industries are increasingly recognised, not only as vehicles of expression, but as drivers of economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion.” she said.

The minister urged members to serve with integrity and diligence, saying their decisions will shape the future of Namibia’s creative economy.
