Treating Your Movember Beard

It’s that time of the year again when gents try to grow the father of all beards – Movember.

Halfway through the month, the goal isn’t ultimately to grow an awesome beard, although that might be the outcome. According to noshave.org, No-Shave November is a means for men to raise awareness by embracing their hair and facial hair, which many cancer patients unfortunately lose while going through chemotherapy.

No-Shave November is a month-long journey during which participants forgo shaving and grooming in order to evoke conversation and raise cancer awareness.

It all started with a dream to bring back the iconic moustache and beard sported by most men during the 70s and the 80s, which disappeared from faces at the turn of the century.

In the early 2000s, Australian buddies from Melbourne, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery were enjoying a cold one when the topic of the moustache popped up. The two wondered what had happened to it? Where did it go? And could they bring it back?

Now in Namibia, beards seem to be a popular trend and as a guy who has to shave every second day to keep completely clean, maintaining a healthy and attractive beard is a struggle. Fortunately for us, there are Namibian products out there to keep us looking fresh.

By Design, a business owned by poet, blogger and young Namibian entrepreneur, Lynn ‘Lacey Lover’ Komu offers natural hair and beard oils.

Speaking at the third annual Natural Hair Expo 2017, Komu had her products on display.

“What I do is I make a base oil that works for everybody. It works for growth, it works for shine and it could be a good replacement for aftershave,” she said, adding that aftershave can dry out skin, whereas her oils don’t.

South African-based business, Brother’s Beard – The Beardo Oil For Brothers, also showcased at the expo. Representative of Brother’s Beard, Takura Chimbuya said: “Beard oil prevents your beard from being itchy, dry and keeps it soft. Many times, you’d find guys scratching their beards. It’s mostly because beards get irritated, and the skin underneath is also pretty much irritated,” he said, adding that this happens when trying to grow a beard or just after you’ve shaven and beard oil relieves this.

“If you’re trying to maintain a beard, it helps it grow healthy and keeps it moisturised.” He added that the the beard balm is just the solid form of the oil.
