A Stampriet farmer walked away with some of the highest prices at the G8 Bonsmara auction on Tuesday.
The auction took place at the Agra/Bank Windhoek Ring, with Tristone Business Trust’s Joggie Briedenhann presenting five bulls.
Of the five, two bulls were sold for N$180 000 and another sold for N$160 000.
In total, Briedenhann walked away with N$520 000.
Briedenhann says he expected his bulls to attract buyers because of their breeding traits and what farmers are looking for.
“I knew that is what the market wants.
And that’s why I brought the bulls. But yes, I’m feeling very happy,” he told The Namibian on Tuesday.
The two top-priced bulls weighed 38kg and 41kg at birth.
Briedenhann says one of the bulls was a curve bender bull, which produces smaller calves at birth that later grow well and can result in heavier weaners and slaughter cattle.
His third-highest selling bull was born on 31 July 2023 and weighed 40kg at birth and 241kg at 205 days.
It recorded a growth value of 143, carcass value of 137 and production value of 123.
Another of the auction’s higher-priced bulls came from Hochfeldstreek Bonsmaras, which sold for N$135 000.
While Briedenhann was pleased with his sales, Thomas Horn from Terraro Bonsmara Zucht said the auction did not go so well for him.
He said Terraro had six bulls up for auction.
“Last year we had a very good auction, and this year it did not go so well,” he said.
The G8 Bonsmara Auction attracted 30 Bonsmara bulls and 25 cows for sale by eight Bonsmara breeders across the country.
