Agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform minister Inge Zaamwani has tasked the newly appointed Fishcor board with strengthening financial controls and restoring public confidence in the state-owned fishing company.
Zaamwani handed over appointment letters to the new National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) board members on Thursday.
She said the new board takes over at an important time when the company needs stronger governance, improved financial accountability and renewed public confidence.
The seven-member board is chaired by Teofilus Nghitila, with Josefina Nekongo serving as deputy chairperson. Other members are John Steytler, Edmund Buys, Ndeyapo Ekandjo, Epsom Jossop and Alisa Jacob.
Zaamwani said one of the board’s main priorities will be to finalise Fishcor’s integrated strategic business plan.
“Fishcor requires strong governance, accountability and strategic leadership. The board has an important responsibility to restore confidence in the corporation and ensure that it operates effectively, transparently and in accordance with its mandate,” Zaamwani said.
The board will further oversee the implementation and monitoring of Fishcor’s business and strategic plans and ensure management delivers on approved plans.
Zaamwani said Fishcor’s future direction should support the government’s Sixth National Development Plan.
Zaamwani said she was confident the new board would lead Fishcor into a period of stronger institutional governance and improved performance.
