Skeletal remains found west of Otjomuise

Identification documents belonging to missing man Beatus Kashanu have been discovered near human skeletal remains in a mountainous area about eight kilometres west of Otjomuise.

National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says the remains were discovered on 18 August by a man herding goats in the area.

The man reportedly alerted a fellow worker, but the matter was only reported to the Otjomuise Police Station late on 19 August.

Police attended the scene on the morning of 20 August, where they recovered several items believed to be linked to the remains.

These included a pair of brown khaki trousers, a grey Puma jersey, Havaianas sandals, two bank cards, cash, a voter registration card and a Namibian national identity card.

Shikwambi says the identification and financial documents belong to Kashanu, who was born at Onakaheke.

Kashanu was reported missing on 12 January.

However, the police have not yet confirmed that the remains are those of Kashanu.

“The remains were transported to the Namibian Police Forensic Science Institute, where forensic experts are conducting further examinations, including DNA analysis, to establish their biological identity,” Shikwambi says.

She says investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and the identity of the remains.

The discovery comes more than seven months after Kashanu was reported missing, with the forensic examination expected to determine whether the remains are those of the missing man.

The police urge anyone with information that could assist investigators to come forward.
