Seasonal flood hits Ohangwena

THE seasonal flood wave from Angola, known as the efundja, has reached the north-western parts of the Ohangwena Region.

Many people had thought that the flood would not occur this year because little rain had been received since January.All the bigger pans that form part of the Cuvelai Delta are now filled with water after heavy rain in Angola.Some villagers between Engela and Oipapakane have had to vacate their homesteads and the Ohangwena Governor is calling upon people to relocate to higher ground.Governor Nghaamwa said the Regional Council would ask the Flood Emergency Management Committee for tents and food for evacuees.He appealed to parents not to let their children cross flooded oshanas without adult supervision.The flood has already washed away at least one road – the gravel road between Ohangwena village and Omhedi. Oshana Governor Klemens Kashuupulwa said on Monday that the floodwater had reached his region from Ohangwena and was moving toward Oshakati and Ongwediva.
