THE commemoration of the 24th Police Day kicked off with a police march in Oshakati in the Oshana region this morning.
The event, which ends tomorrow, begin with a street procession on Valley Road, Ongwediva which proceeded through the Oshakati main road to the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
During the parade various police units gave the Inspector General of the Namibia Police Force and the Interpol vice president for Africa Sebastian Ndeitunga, the march-past salute as he stood at the Oshakati medical centre to welcome the force.
The celebrations will coincide with the basic police and training graduation ceremony of cadet constables tomorrow. The trainees underwent six-month extensive basic police training course at the Ruben “Danger” Ashipala Police Training Centre at Ondangwa.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba will inspect the pass out parade tomorrow and present trophies and awards to he best achievers of the police force.
The Interpol “Turn Back Crime” campaign, which is aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of organised crime and its impact on the society will be launched tomorrow.
Other dignitaries including Prime Minister and President-Elect Hage Geingob, Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, diplomatic corps, foreign police chiefs and Interpol representatives are expected at the event.
The Namibia Police Force was established in 1990 with a meagre 800 officers but today the force boasts of over 16 000 officers.
