Over 1 000 robberies, theft cases in two months

Robberies, thefts and housebreakings have soared in the Khomas region, with 2 000 reported cases.

In a letter to the Office of the Governor last week, Khomas commander commissioner David Indongo said in the region 619 cases of theft were recorded in May. This was a slight decrease from the 657 reported in April.

This includes theft under false pretences.

“Robberies of all types reported in May were 207 and 211 in April,” the letter reads.

Similarly, housebreaking at residential properties stood at 247 in both months, while 59 business premises were hit.

The regional commander said they are faced with a shortage of manpower, transport, as well as offices and accommodation.
“Currently, the region is without a headquarters,” Indongo said of their challenges.

Meanwhile, the region has experienced a violent past two months with almost 500 assaults and cases of domestic violence reported.

Indongo further said 337 cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm were reported. “Domestic violence stands at 65 in May and 78 in April, with 13 cases of rape reported in May as opposed to 11 in April,” the letter reads. This brings the total to 480 cases reported to the Namibian Police. The commissioner said most of the domestic violence is due to the abuse of alcohol and other substances.
