Ohangwena comic eyes online success

Teoflus Shipila

Namibian content creator Teoflus Shipila, better known as Namcomedy, is turning a passion for comedy and storytelling into a growing digital career while calling for greater support for local creators.

Shipila (29), who hails from a village in the Ohangwena region, has built a sizeable online following through comedy skits and entertainment content that showcase Namibian culture and everyday experiences.

“Growing up in a rural area taught me the value of perseverance, creativity, and hard work, although opportunities were limited, I always believed talent can come from anywhere and dreams are valid – regardless of where a person comes from,” he says.

Shipila says he focuses on content creation, using digital platforms to reach audiences across Namibia and beyond. Producing content consistently, however, remains a challenge he says.

“One of the biggest challenges I continue to face is developing fresh and engaging content ideas that resonate with audiences. Content creation requires constant innovation and creativity,” he says.

Production logistics also remain difficult. Shipila says filming often involves coordinating actors, locations and schedules with limited resources.

“Access to professional equipment, production funding, reliable transport, and editing resources remains a challenge.”

Despite these obstacles, Shipila has continued to expand his online presence. He currently has more than 70 000 followers on TikTok, over 46 000 followers on Facebook, more than 15 000 YouTube subscribers, and a growing Instagram audience.

His best-known productions include ‘Ndonga Hun’ and ‘Ohonda’, which have attracted thousands of viewers online.

“The support from my audience continues to motivate me to push forward and create even better content,” he says.

Shipila is also preparing to release a new movie on YouTube, a project he describes as an important milestone in his career.

Beyond his own work, he believes Namibia’s creative sector has significant untapped potential.

“There are many talented young creators across the country who have the skills and passion to succeed but lack the resources and support needed to reach their full potential,” he says.

He is urging the government, businesses and other stakeholders to invest in local creators through sponsorships, training opportunities, partnerships and equipment support.

“Content creation is more than entertainment. It is a tool for education, tourism promotion, cultural preservation, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment,” he says.

Shipila’s message to aspiring creators is simple: “Do not allow your circumstances to define your future. Whether you come from a village, a town, or a city, your dreams are valid.

“Stay focused, continue learning, work hard, and never stop believing in yourself.”
