The late match officials Edmund Smith and Christof Alfred Vries were respected for their dedication to the beautiful game in the country, and their presence will be sorely missed, the Namibia Football Association (NFA) said yesterday.
The two referees died in a car crash on Sunday.
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the tragic passing of two dedicated and esteemed members of the Namibia Football Association’s refereeing community, Edmund Smith and Christof Alfred Vries, in a horrific accident that occurred on Sunday, 1 October,” the NFA said in statement.
“Smith and Vries were not only respected referees, but also cherished individuals within the Namibian football family. Their unwavering passion for the game and commitment to upholding its integrity will forever be remembered,” the statement read.
“Both men played pivotal roles in ensuring fair play and sportsmanship on the football pitch, and their contributions to the sport extended far beyond the field of play.
“They served as role models for aspiring referees and made lasting impressions on everyone fortunate enough to know them,” the NFA said.
“The Namibia Football Association extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of Edmund Smith and Christof Alfred Vries during this incredibly difficult time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through this unimaginable loss.”
