Nehemia is new NamWater head

BRANDON VAN WYKDEPUTY agriculture permanent secretary Abraham Nehemia has been appointed the new NamWater chief executive officer with effect from 3 January 2019.

This was contained in a statement issued by the company in Windhoek yesterday.

Nehemia takes over from Vaino Shivute in a contract that runs to December 2023. Shivute has headed the company from December 2002.

Nehemia has served as a member of NamWater’s board of directors for close to 10 years, of which three were served as the chairperson of the board.

He also briefly worked with the Namibia National Planning Commission developing and also helped implementing the country’s first census.

Nehemia brings to NamWater a wealth of experience in water policy and regulations, water resource management and water supply, the statement read.

According to the statement, his involvement in international water issues, especially in the Southern African Development Community, has contributed towards the development of river basin organisations such as the Zambezi Commission, the Kunene Permanent Joint Technical Commission and the Orasecom Commission on the Orange River.

The statement also said Nehemia played a major role in the development and operationalisation of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (Amcow) and is one of the founding members of the African Ministers’ Council on Water-technical advisory committee (Amcow-TAC).
