The Namibia Media Professionals Union (Nampu) salutes every media worker, from reporters, editors, cleaners, printers, drivers and admin staff, on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.
“Without you, there is no press, no truth, no democracy. Give yourselves a pat on the back!
Nampu still observes injustice across media houses in Namibia as workers are breaking under the weight of low wages, toxic management, mental health crises, and job insecurity in a very volatile environment.”
“Those who speak up are isolated. Those who burn out are replaced. We say this without fear: Enough is enough. There is no decent work if it destroys your mind. There is no social justice if workers suffer in silence,” says Nampu acting administrator Jemima Beukes in a statement.
She says the government must ensure, within its mandate, that media houses provide fair wages and permanent contracts as well as safe working environments and mental health support for all workers.
“This Workers’ Day, we call on all media workers to organise, unionise and defend each other. Because when we stand alone, we suffer – but together, we rise. Our minds matter. Our labour matters. Our union is our power,” says Beukes.
