Namibian among Golden Globe nominations

NAMIBIAN-BORN Californian creative Reginald Emvula is among artists whose creative work and artistry will be on display when the 2022 Golden Globes awards winners are announced on Sunday night.

The awards ceremony was scheduled for Sunday, 9 January, at 04h00 and Monday at 06h00 Namibian time.

Emvula worked as technical animation artist on the two leading animation nominations in the best picture animated category at this year’s Golden Globes, ‘Encanto’ and ‘Raya and the last dragon’.

The three other contenders in this category are ‘Flee’, ‘Luca’ and ‘My Sunny Maad’.

Emvula, who hails from Walvis Bay and alma mater of St George’s Diocesan School in Windhoek, joined the global leader in animation films, Walt Disney Animation Studios, two years ago as character technical director where he worked on ‘Encanto’ and ‘Raya and the last dragon’.

‘Encanto’ is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced with a budget of between US$120 million and US$150 million, while ‘Raya and the last dragon’ is a 2021 American computer-animated fantasy adventure film produced with a US$100 million budget.

‘Raya and the last dragon’ grossed US$54,7 million in the United States and Canada, and US$75,6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of US$130,3 million.

Before this, he worked at Dreamswork Animation where he worked on the 2019 animation film ‘How to train your dragon 3’ and the 2020 animation film ‘Boss baby’.

In 2021, ‘Raya and the last dragon’ won the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association award, the BMI film and TV awards for theatrical film category. Apart from the Golden Globes 2022, it is also nominated as a top contender in 10 categories in the 2022 Annie Awards.

As of January 7, ‘Encanto’ has grossed US$92 million in the United States and Canada, and US$115,7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of US$207,7 million.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Emvula also worked on 2022 animation work projects, which include the Strange World animated adventure film, ‘Zootopia+’ and the ‘Baymax!’ animation series.
