Mungunda now vice president of global association

THE Social Security Commission’s chief executive, Milka Mungunda, was on Wednesday appointed as the International Social Security Association’s vice president.

The International Social Security Association (Issa) announced her appointment on Twitter yesterday.

Speaking to from Geneva, Mungunda confirmed her appointment, noting that she will be the first African to hold this position.

She will serve on the board for three years.

“Within the social security family, this is a very high position, and I feel honoured to occupy it. Issa is 127 years old. It’s the first time that somebody from outside the European region is occupying this position. It’s an honour for the SSC, Namibia, SADC and the African region as a whole,” Mungunda stated.

Currently attending the Issa bureau meeting, she said her position came to Namibia at an appropriate time which complements the Harambee Prosperity Plan.

“This position is, therefore, coming to Namibia at the most appropriate time as it addresses the President’s HPP, and the commitments Namibia has made to ensure that it will eradicate poverty and provide a social security safety net for their citizens,” she added.

The world is now focused on Namibia with her appointment, which is a big challenge for the country to deliver as promised.

“Issa will, therefore, not only be there to fulfil this mandate, but also be there to guide and assist us,” Mungunda said.

Issa is a global body of social security-centred institutions, government departments and agencies.

It promotes improved social security administration by developing and sharing professional guidelines, and by providing expert knowledge, services and support for its members throughout the world.
