Ministry to pay crocodile victim N$10 000

THE Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism says it will pay a man who was attacked and injured by a crocodile while fetching water from the Okavango River on Friday N$10 000.

In a media statement released on Saturday, the ministry says the compensation is in line with the national policy on human-wildlife conflict.

The ministry says Rundu resident Nashirere John (29) was attacked at the recreational area known as Rundu Beach.

Rundu has been without water for days, which is forcing residents to fetch water from the crocodile-infested river.

“The influx of people to the site has become prevalent due to the water situation at Rundu. Hence it may have attracted crocodiles,” the ministry says.

It says it has dispatched a team to monitor the situation at the river, particularly the presence of crocodiles in the area.

“The crocodile, if spotted, will be put down as a problem-causing animal for the safety of the residents,” the statement says.

The ministry is urging residents to be cautious at all times when making use of the river, and to avoid undertaking activities that may risk their lives, such as swimming, washing, or bathing in the river.
