The Katima Mulilo Town Council has resolved to consider writing off debts of qualifying pensioners and people with disabilities at the town.
In a public notice issued yesterday, the council says it would identify pensioners and people with disabilities who are eligible to benefit from the debt relief in accordance with government policy directives.
These people must visit the council offices with the necessary documentation and account information between 21 and 31 July to be considered.
“This exercise is only applicable to account holders who were aged 60 and older during the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021) and whose disability status dates back to the same period.
“The public is advised that this notice does not constitute automatic approval of debt write-off. All applications and accounts will be assessed in accordance with ministerial directive, council, and applicable legislation,” the notice says.
Pensioners and people with disabilities are urged to bring along their valid Namibian identity document, proof of pensioner status or a valid disability certificate, and any other documents that may be requested by the council.
