Hozei Legitimate and his passion for hip-hop

HOZEI Legitimate, real name Hosea Hafeni Hamalwa, has been enjoying the success of his debut album ‘Addicted to Hip-Hop’ which boasts 10 tracks with a feature from Rae Monae.

The album is a fusion of old and new school hip-hop. What makes it stand out is the fact that it has songs for fans of both old school hip-hop as well the newer variants such as trap music, which is a sub-genre.

The album kicks of with ‘A.T Hip-Hop’, an interlude where the rapper talks about how he is passionate about hip-hop, how the genre has changed his life and made him a better person.

Even though most of the songs on the album have strong replay values, those that have commercial appeal and demand a repeat when you first listen to the album are ‘Secret Haters’, ‘Ride’ and ‘The Best’ which features Rae Monae.

On why this body of work has less features, Hozei Legitimate told The Namibian that initially he was not looking forward to working with anyone. He believes other people do not take someone else’s dream too seriously and thus do not give their all when contributing to another person’s project.

“I had to create my own sound, different from what is out there and I featured Rae Monae because she showed me that she is also addicted to hip-hop,” he said.

In an effort to promote this album, Hozei Legitimate shot the music video for the track ‘The Best’, which he released on Monday, 16 July.

Rae Monae told that working with Hozei Legitimate was a great learning experience as she believes the rapper is one of the best people she knows who produces music. “He is very passionate about his craft and thus it was easy for me to work with him both during the recording process as well as when we shot the music video,” said Rae Monae.
