Minister of information and communication technology Emma Theofelus inaugurated a new 60-metre MTC network tower, extending 4G coverage at the Epinga village in the Omundaungilo constituency of the Ohangwena region.
The tower, funded through the universal service fund (USF) under the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia, is the first project completed since the fund’s launch in March.
Residents described the development as “a long time coming,” saying it will greatly improve communication and digital access.
Theofelus during the launch on Wednesday said the project marks a significant step towards bridging the digital gap in rural areas.
As part of the launch, more than 130 Oka smartphones were donated to residents –100 from the USF, 20 from Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), and 10 from MTC managing director Licky Erastus.
“The benefits of today’s launch extend beyond the tower. These devices and SIM cards will ensure that the people of Epinga can fully connect and participate digitally,” Theofelus said.
More projects under the USF are expected to be rolled out nationwide.
