Oranjemund mother arrested after children left unattended and house fire breaks out

A woman (28) has been arrested at Oranjemund for allegedly leaving her two young children unattended in a locked house, after which a fire broke out.

Namibian Police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says the incident occurred on Friday at around 12h20.

She notes that the woman allegedly left her children, aged three and five, locked inside the house while she was away.

“The children switched on the heater and it caught fire. Fortunately, the children were rescued by neighbours when they saw smoke coming out of the house and broke the window,” Shikwambi says.

The woman was arrested for allegedly contravening section 6 of the Child Care and Protection Act, Act 3 of 2015.

She is expected to appear in the Oranjemund Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Police investigations continue.
