City admits inconsistent billing

The City of Windhoek has acknowledged that some of its accounts reveal anomalies within it billing system.

Windhoek mayor Queen Kamati on Thursday said the city has detected errors through its internal controls.

She said community members have reported this, and affected accounts have been flagged and isolated.

Kamati said the council has sourced outside assistance from auditing firm Deloitte to conduct a forensic investigation into the matter

“This matter has our urgent attention, and we are committed to resolving it with the highest level of professionalism,” she said in a statement.

Kamati assured residents that the city is addressing the issue.

“If a client’s account is overcharged or undercharged, they should contact our Customer Contact Centre with their account details for further investigation and assistance,” she said.

The mayor said overcharging or undercharging of municipal accounts occur occasionally due to errors in billing, meter readings, or data entry.
