Zambian coach Charles Bwale has picked the final team for the TN Mobile African Women Championship which kicks off in Windhoek on Saturday.
According to the list released in Lusaka on Monday, Bwale has included veteran goalkeeper Mirriam Katamanda and under-17 custodian Hazel Nali in his 22-member squad.
Bwale has also included Australia-based striker Carol Theresa Howels, while Kabange Mupopo, who represented Zambia in athletics at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, will captain the side.
The Football Association of Zambia’s (FAZ) communications manager Nkweto Tembwe said the team is expected to leave for Namibia on Tuesday.
He said the technical bench has picked the best team and appealed to the corporate world to sponsor the squad, which will be making a debut appearance at the finals.
“The best three teams in Namibia will qualify for the World Cup. Surely when you look at it, Zambia’s chances are very high. We need to come on board and help the team financially,” Tembwe said.
Tembwe said the association is financially constrained because of looking after the age group teams that have qualified for various international tournaments.
“We want people and organisations to come on board and be part of the great success for women football. We need to help our women teams succeed,” added Tembwe.
Zambia is in Group A with Ivory Coast, six-time champions Nigeria and hosts Namibia.
Shepolopolo on Saturday held Cameroon to a goalless draw at Lusaka’s Nkoloma Stadium, having lost to the same opposition 2-0 a few days earlier.
