caf-Algeria beat Ghana

Algeria joined Cameroon at the top of Group B at the Africa Women Championships after beating Ghana 1-0 on Sunday night.

Horiya Affak scored the winner two minutes from time when she headed in a cross by Naima Benziane.

Benziane had a great match and constantly had the Ghanaian defence at sixes and sevens with her tricky runs. On 15 minutes she broke through the midfield and sent a pass in that Nachida Laifa missed with an open goal gaping.

On 30 minutes Benziane once again shone as she set Fethia Bekhedda clear but Ghana’s cover defence recovered.

At the other end, a cracking free kick by Faiza Ibrahim on 34 minutes bounced off the upright.

Chances were few and far between in the second half.

Portia Boakye and Hillia Kobblah both missed chances for Ghana, while Myriam Benlazar and Benziane both came close for Algeria.

The winning goal came two minutes from time when Benziane broke down the right wing and sent in a cross that Algerian substitute Horiya Affak headed in over the line.

Benziane won the Woman of the Match award.
