As they win FNB Football Festival final
A SUBLIME performance from Brave Warriors forward Rudolf Bester gave his premiership side Eleven Arrows a fantastic start to the year with two great goals in their 3-0 win over Black Africa on Saturday.
Playing in front of a capacity crowd in the first FNB Football Festival final match, Bester showed his superiority in midfield despite efforts by Lolo Goraseb to keep him in check.
The 25 year-old Bester was responsible for the opening goal in the 26th minute after a superb one-two with his striking partners, before Tara Katupose put him clear to stab in a beauty from close range.
His second and last goal was a textbook grass-cutter from the edge of the box from a perfect Sheya Andimba pass that left BA goalkeeper Bongile Grootboom with virtually nothing to do to stop it.
This goal sealed the first victory for Arrows in a top-flight cup competition since 1990 and it also reaffirmed their intentions of being among the big guns for this season’s premiership title.
Arrows’ second goal was scored by Henry Somseb through a penalty in the 68th minute.
Bester, who is at times used as a left winger by Brave Warriors mentor Tom Saintfiet, returned from Serbia late last year after his contract with FK Cukaricki Stankom came to an end.
He will be key to the success of Arrows this season. The team has some good players including identical twins Muna and Tara Katupose, Andimba, Somseb amnd Edward Damaseb.
Their head coach Gilbert Rwasoka and his assistant Konnis Asino currently form one of the best coaching pairs in the league and their tactical and technical intelligence is yet to be tested this season.
STARS ENDS THIRD
Ikuaterua Tjozongoro and Edison Muheua shone for African Stars as their respective goals gave their side a 2-0 win over Tigers in the third- and fourth-place playoff before the final match.
Stars looked more eager for goals in a match that produced little spark, but was also dominated by the midfielders of both teams who consistently turned in circles in the middle of the park.
Tigers came close on three occasions, but poor finishing and a sense of no urgency made them pay dearly after Stars capitalised on their opportunities twice, due to the lack of concentration in the Tigers defence.
Tigers goalie and captain Fox Nambundunga was clearly frustrated after the match after he tried his best to keep the team in contention, while coach Willem Kapukare faces an increasing task of turning the fortunes around when the league resumes this week.
A curtain raiser earlier in the day saw an FNB Invitational side racing past the National Media Team 7-5 in hot weather conditions at the same venue.
The FNB Invitational side had several female players, but a poor display by goalkeeper Laizy Naanda and a completely different team in the second half, which was never near any training field, cost the media team the match.
