WANDERERS and WHS Old Boys scored big victories to secure their places in the semifinals of the Three Ships Club Cricket Premier League competition on Saturday.
At the CCD field, Wanderers thrashed CCD Tigers by 349 runs, while WHS Old Boys beat United by 89 runs at the WHS Field.
With the group stage of the competition now having been completed, United are the team to miss out on a semifinal place after their defeat to WHS Old Boys.
EBH Coastal finished first on the log on 24 points and will now take on fourth-placed CCD Tigers (12 points), while second-placed Wanderers (20) take on third-placed WHS Old Boys (16 points) in next weekend’s semifinals.
At the CCD Field, Wanderers gave a great batting display to thrash CCD Tigers by 349 runs. They built up a huge total of 462 for eight wickets off their 50 overs, and then dismissed CCD Tigers for 113 to complete a huge victory.
Nicolaas Scholtz led the way with a brilliant century, scoring 114 off only 67 balls, that included seven fours and seven sixes.
Gert Lotter was just as destructive, scoring 72 off only 26 balls, which included nine sixes, while Gerrie Snyman scored 66 off 44 balls, including seven sixes.
There were also good contributions from Michau du Preez (57), Wessel Myburgh (30) and LP van der Westhuizen (25) as Wanderers piled on a huge total.
Pikky Ya France was CCD Tigers’ best bowler, with three wickets for 63 runs off 10 overs.
CCD Tigers couldn’t get close to the total and lost wickets regularly.
Opener Justin Baard scored 50 which included five fours and two sixes, but he received little support before the whole team was out for 113 off only 29 overs.
Jan Isak de Villiers was Wanderers’ best bowler, taking five wickets for 21 runs off four overs, while Gerrie Snyman took 2/26 off 10 overs.
United’s hopes of making the play-offs ended after they suffered an 89-run defeat to WHS Old Boys at the United field.
WHS Old Boys batted first, scoring 270 all out, while United replied with 181 all out.
WHS Old Boys’ innings got off to a great start as Albert van der Merwe and Gareth Cloete shared a century stand for the first wicket. Both batsmen were unlucky not to reach their centuries with Cloete making 77 and Van der Merwe 90.
In their reply, United lost regular wickets as they gradually fell behind the target.
Hendrik van der Walt top scored with 40, while Dewald Nel added 33, but they did not receive much support as the whole team was out for 181.
Tangeni Lungameni with 3/29 off 10 overs and Uli Fortuin with 3/50 off 10 were WHS Old Boys’ best bowlers.
