The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) says no one is above the law following the conviction and sentencing of veteran lawyer and former Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) board chairperson Dirk Conradie.
Conradie was fined N$200 000 or face a sentence of five years in prison in the Windhoek High Court on Monday while Sarah Damases was fined N$60 000 or two years in prison.
“No status. No profession. No position of authority puts anyone above the law,” the ACC says.
The two were convicted in February on corruption related offences linked to a N$60 million MTC advertising contract awarded in 2012.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ACC welcomes the sentences, saying the case demonstrates that abusing entrusted authority and using influence for personal or third party benefit carries serious consequences.
The ACC says judge Thomas Masuku has underscored the seriousness of Conradie’s conduct, particularly given his professional responsibilities as a legal practitioner and his duty to uphold the law.
“The case sends a powerful message: abusing entrusted authority and using influence for personal or third-party benefit carries serious consequences,” the ACC says.
The ACC says it remains committed to fighting corruption, promoting integrity and strengthening accountability across Namibia.
