Tribal border dispute in spotlight again

A BORDER dispute between the Ondonga and Oukwanyama tribes in the North was again under discussion at a meeting led by the Minister of Regional and Local Government, Jerry Ekandjo, at Ongwediva last week Thursday.

All eight traditional authorities in the former Owambo – Ondonga, Oukwanyama, Uukwambi, Ombalantu, Ongandjera, Uukwaluudhi, Uukolonkadhi and Ombandja/Okalongo – were represented at the meeting that lasted for more than three hours. The media were not allowed to attend. The dispute dates back to Independence. The Ondonga Traditional Authority accuses the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority of having taken away villages under its jurisdiction in the south-eastern part of the Ohangwena Region. The Oukwanyama Traditional Authority insists that the area falls under its jurisdiction.Although six other traditional authorities were called in last week to help Government, they are no closer to a solution.A source told The Namibian that the discussion heated up, and it was agreed that a committee consisting of members of other traditional authorities would be formed to investigate the border dispute.
