Tigers stun Stars, BA and Arrows win

TWO second-half goals from Kenny Malgas and Nelson Akwenye helped Tigers stun Premier League defending champions African Stars 2-0 on Friday.

The loss leaves the champions lying third from bottom on the Namibia Premier League (NPL) log standings after three matches. Stars’ poor run of form has yielded only two points in their other two matches, which ended in draws. Following their 1-0 win over Black Africa last week, Tigers have now impressively recorded two wins from their two opening matches against two top sides, and in the process have established themselves as genuine title contenders this season. Tigers showed a steely determination to keep their more fancied opponents at bay before delivering two killer goals on the counter-attack. BA meanwhile bounced back from the defeat to Tigers in emphatic fashion as they thumped Mighty Gunners 6-1at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium. Zimbabwean Clarence Foroma and the stocky Rudi Louw scored a brace each, while Bradley Wermann and Warren Neidel got the other two goals for BA. BA lie second, ahead of Tigers on goal difference, and one point behind log leaders Ramblers who were held to a goalless draw by SKW last Wednesday. Eleven Arrows moved off the foot of the table with a crushing 5-1 defeat of Oshakati City in Walvis Bay. Arrows are now placed eighth with City occupying seventh spot. Blue Waters, another coastal outfit, posted an impressive away return – 2-1 – against a poor Orlando Pirates side. Hendrik Somaeb and Wycliff Kambonde gave Waters an early two-nil lead before Engelhardt Kahua pulled a goal back in the second half for Pirates. Blue Waters have done well on their recent visits to Windhoek, having taken a point from their opening match against Stars over a fortnight ago. Elsewhere, Blue Boys lost by a solitary goal to Civics at home in Swakopmund.
