MANY parents in Windhoek were left looking for places for their children yesterday, as they were turned away at schools that are already full.
Yesterday marked the start of the new school year countrywide.
Chaos reigned at the Moses //Garoëb Project School in Katutura, where the Ministry of Education was supposed to have erected a few tents to accommodate the first- and second-graders for two weeks.
The school is still under construction and should be finished in about two weeks. In the meantime the children will be accommodated in tents, like last year.
When parents, pupils and teachers arrived, there was no sign of any tents. It was eventually found that the tents were being erected next to the new buildings, further down the road.
Workers were putting up tents but there was no sign of any furniture or toilets for the children. These were expected to be delivered later in the day.
However, all children who were already registered were divided into their grades and assigned to their teachers. Parents who still wanted to register were helped by the principal of the Moses //Garoëb Project School, Myra Griqua, using her car and a box as office and desk.
An angry parent, who asked to remain anonymous, said: ‘We are very disappointed with the Ministry of Education that they still have not erected the tents and that they are not ready for our children – they know that the school year starts today. They are the ones that told us that it starts today so they should have been ready for our children yesterday already.’
