The police has increased the reward for any information leading to the arrest of suspects in the recent murder cases at Okahandja to N$120 000.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Otjozondjupa regional commander commissioner Filip Hidengwa during a peaceful demonstration by residents of Okahandja.
“We call on any person with information that might lead to the arrest of these suspects to call us or report it to the nearest police station,” he said.
He stated that so far, no suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder cases of Ingrid Maasdorp (5), Roswinds Fabianu (6) and Beyoncé !Kharuxas (15).
More than 5 000 people joined the peaceful demonstration at Okahandja which started at the bridge along the new A1 Road in the Veddersdal area and ended in the centre of town.
The residents handed over a petition and several statements which condemned the brutal killings of Maasdorp, Fabianu and !Kharuxas.
According to the police, the girls were raped, mutilated and their bodies dumped at different places around Okahandja.
Community members in their petition called on the police to increase police visibility and conduct unannounced roadblocks, particularly near schools and known crime hotspots at Veddersdal, Nau-Aib, Five Rand and Osona village.
“We call for youth engagement programmes aimed at developing crime prevention initiatives,” they said.
The Okahandja residents also demanded the immediate repair of all malfunctioning streetlights to improve nighttime visibility. Additionally, they requested the installation of floodlights in areas identified as frequent crime scenes.
Nearly 9 700 people have so far signed the petition which was handed over to Hidengwa and deputy minister of education, innovation, sport, youth, arts and culture Dino Ballotti, who also attended the peaceful march.
