Tekken, Fifa18 national grand finale set

THIS weekend, the Namibian Electronic Sports Association (Nesa) will present the exciting final round of the 2018 Tekken & Fifa national tournament where players will compete for the honour of representing Namibia internationally.

Tekken is a popular 3D fighting game developed originally for arcades. The game series continues to develop with Tekken7 being the ninth instalment, and which had already surpassed the 2,5 million sales mark in the world by the end of 2017.

On the other hand, the Fifa football simulation video game is one of the best-selling sports series, with a new instalment being released every year. Fifa18, which was released in September 2017, reached sales peaks of 10 million by January 2018, and already Fifa19 is due for release in September this year.

On 16 June, from 10h00 to 17h00 at the Imagine Games Café in Macadam Street, Windhoek, two players from Tekken and as many from Fifa will be chosen for Namibia’s eSports team.

“Nesa would herewith like to invite the public to come and support their friends and family or favourite players on this special day,” Nesa treasurer Salomé de Bruyn said.

“Points will be awarded to each participant according to their placement in the finals’ brackets, as well as how they act as individuals during the event. This will be the third time that Namibia chooses national players for Fifa and the second time for Tekken,” she added.

“International matches are already being organised for the winners to compete against South Africa, and Nesa is making every effort to present more opportunities to these athletes.

“Should Namibian eSports receive adequate sponsorship for 2018, it will be possible for one of the national Tekken players to also represent Namibia at the 10th International eSports Federation (IeSF) world championship that will take place in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan,” she added.

Last year’s champions were Rashaad Matjila and John Walenga for Fifa, with Freddy Mazila and Morné Hough the top Tekken competitors.

Mazila went on to become the first player to represent Namibia at the IeSF 2017 world championship in Busan, South Korea.

Saturday’s event is sponsored by Monster Energy. For more information, visit the Nesa Facebook page at Nesa.Namibia, or contact Flip de Bruyn, Nesa technical director, on 081141 5100.
