Teacher accused of assault on pupils gets bail

A teacher who was arrested for allegedly assaulting 30 pupils at a primary school in the Kavango West region has been granted bail.

Christine Kupembona (33), who is a teacher at Jupo Junior Primary School in Kavango West, was arrested last weekend for allegedly punishing her pupils by making them crawl on stones around a tree.

It is alleged that the pupils got injuries to their knees in the process.

Magistrate Barry Mufana granted Kupembona bail in an amount of N$5 000 in the periodic magistrate’s court at Kahenge.

Kupembona has been charged with seven counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and seven counts of assault by threat.

She was released on condition that she does not interfere with state witnesses or interfere with the police investigation of her case.

She was also told not to return to the same school until the education ministry has decided where to place her.

Kupembona was represented by defence lawyer Bernhard Tjatjara, while public prosecutor Godfry Shivolo represented the state.
