Suspected Havana thief hospitalised after ‘mob justice’

A Man was hospitalised in Windhoek on Thursday after being assaulted by community members accusing him of breaking into their homes and stealing from them.

National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the incident, saying the man was subjected to mob justice and later hospitalised.

A video circulating on social media, which is not for sensitive viewers, shows the assaulted and wounded man lying on the ground while bystanders shout at him.

“I spoke to the Wanaheda Police Station commander, because the video clearly has mentions of ‘Havana’, which is a Wanaheda police jurisdiction.

“No case of assault relating to the incident was, however, reported, so the victim did not open a case.

“We, however, would like to warn the public to desist from taking the law in their own hands. It is unlawful,” Shikwambi warned.
