Standard Bank Super Cup launched

The second edition of the Standard Bank Super Cup was launched on Thursday afternoon at Football House as preparations for the once-off lucrative match on 1 August at the Sam Nujoma stadium gets underway in earnest.

Following the first successful edition last year when Black Africa beat African Stars 3-2 to take the honours, Standard Bank Namibia once again presented a N$1 million cheque to get preparations underway for another football spectacle for 2015.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport, Agnes Tjongarero commended Standard Bank for their football sponsorship.

“I am always pleased to preside at events of this magnitude which adds quality and value to sport and to football in particular. The commitment made here today by Standard Bank Namibia bears testimony to how corporate Namibia is heeding the call by government to invest in sports development and it is our wish that more corporates will follow suit,” Tjongarero said.

“Gestures like this by Standard Bank Namibia will always be cherished and supported by government hence my presence here today. Allow me to urge the two teams, especially the players to take this cup seriously and ensure that the sponsors, Standard Bank Namibia, will consider extending their sponsorship agreement, either in terms of funds or editions to come,” she added.

Standard Bank Namibia CEO Vetumbuavi Mungunda confirmed his company’s commitment to the game.

“Football does not only unite the nation, but it also brings hope and excitement to millions of people. Football is also an industry which pays rentals and bills, educates children and adds to the growth of the economy. We at Standard Bank Namibia are once again proud to be able to bring this football spectacle to the people of Namibia as it is all about developing local football in our country,” he said.

“It is against this background that Standard Bank Namibia decided to invest a grand sum of N$3 million over a three-year period to the Namibia Football Association in hosting the Standard Bank Super Cup. From this amount we are here to present the N$1 million cheque at this press conference – symbolising our commitment to the development of this beloved sport in the country,” he added.

NFA president Frans Mbidi in his speech read by NFA second vice president Ludwig Nunuheb expressed the NFA’s appreciation of the sponsorship for the match.

“Our football has come a long way with limited resources and it is therefore very pleasing and encouraging for us, the leaders of football, to note that corporate citizens such as Standard Bank Namibia, do care about the welfare of our young people, the footballers, and inject large sums of monies for the betterment of the game,” Nunuheb said.

The once-off match will see winners go home N$500 000 richer while the losers will receive N$250 000. – nfa.org.na
