Exquisite! That is all one could say about the quality of squash that was on display at the coast recently.

The tournament featured 12 men’s teams, four women’s teams and eight mixed doubles teams. It was easy to see that the tournament came at the right time in the year when most players are not fit.Doubles accords the payers the opportunity to play highly competitive squash even without the fitness due to the less space required to cover on court. The weekend proved a strenuous one for players who were involved in a large number of games that had a 3-2 score line. What contributed most to the tiredness of players however was the amount effort required to win a point.Players had to be patient so as not to concede point while at the same time relentlessly pursuing a single point for long periods of time that seemed to last forever. The ladies doubles was won by Carla Cummings and Jenny Pahl who beat Lynette Rautenbach and Lucinda Rodrigues 3-1.The mixed doubles went to Wynand Breytenbach and Lucinda Rodrigues who were both playing in their second final of the day. They were second time lucky with a convincing 3-1 win over married couple Jaco and Marlene De Witt. The main event saw four times Supatronix Doubles Champion Nelson Herunga team up with Tyc Kahengo for the first time in the event.Windhoek-based Nelson and Walvis-based Tyc took on the experienced Wynand Breytenbach and Angelo Titus nicknamed “The bouncing ball”, both from Walvis Bay.The game lasted an astonishing two hours like so many others over the weekend.Nelson Herunga’s slick touch and deceptive pace combined with Tyc Kahengo’s agility and finesse with movements, as if he were walking on air, were too good for the boys from the coast.Veteran Wynand Breytenbach and Angelo Titus put up a good show in an intense fast paced battle. However Nelson Herunga and Tyc Kahengo showed nerves of steel and prevailed with a close 3-2 victory. The night ended with a prize-giving braai where Wynand Breytenbach thanked the players, supporters and specially Supatronix for sponsoring the event.Jose De Brito owner of Supatronix attended and presented the prizes.
