The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) in the Khomas region has launched a grassroots empowerment programme aimed at helping young entrepreneurs turn small businesses into sustainable sources of income.
The SPYL Khomas region Micro Vendor Support Programme made its first intervention on Friday, when the youth league handed over a donation to young vetkoek vendors to help strengthen their operations.
SPYL Khomas region secretary Johannes Iyambo said the initiative was born out of a need to provide practical support to young people who are already trying to create livelihoods for themselves despite limited access to capital and equipment.
“We have young people who are not waiting for employment but are creating opportunities for themselves through small businesses. Our responsibility is to identify them and see how we can support them to grow,” Iyambo said.
He said his office would continue to identify young entrepreneurs operating at small scale and mobilise resources, including small capital and machinery, to help them expand their businesses.
“This is not just about giving someone a once-off donation. We want to see these young people grow their businesses, become sustainable and, where possible, create employment for others,” Iyambo said.
The initiative is also aimed at contributing to efforts to address youth unemployment by promoting entrepreneurship, self-reliance and economic participation.
Iyambo said the SPYL in the Khomas region remained committed to supporting practical initiatives that directly improve the livelihoods of young people.
“We want young people to know that their ideas and small businesses matter. Even a small business can become something bigger when it receives the right support,” he said.
