Pioneering captain Nelago Kwedhi

The story of Nelago Kwedhi is one of courage and progress.

She became the first female captain to command a fishing trawler based at NovaNam at Lüderitz, marking an important milestone for Namibia’s fishing industry and for women at sea.

Her achievement was later celebrated in a documentary that received international recognition in Europe and the United States, ‘The City Born from the Sea’.

The document starts in Kwedhi’s northern village, continuing with her journey through the desert to Lüderitz. Her story is a reminder that maritime history is not only about ships and oceans. It is also about the people who challenge expectations and open new paths for those who follow.
