THE Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) has announced that South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, will assume the role of chairperson of the summit, taking over from president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Sacu in a media statement on Tuesday says South Africa will assume the chairmanship of the Sacu Summit, Council of Ministers and Commission, effective 15 July 2025 to 14 July 2026.
South Africa takes over from Namibia which held the Sacu chair from 15 July 2024 to 14 July this year. The Sacu chairmanship rotates among the member states for 12 months.
The statement adds that the minister of trade, industry and competition of South Africa, Parks Tau, will assume the role of chairperson of the Sacu Council of Ministers, taking over from the minister of finance in Namibia, Ericah Shafudah.
The deputy director general of trade in the department of trade, industry and competition of South Africa, ambassador Xolelwa Mlumbi-Peter, takes over as the chairperson of the Sacu Commission from executive director in the Ministry of Finance of Namibia, Michael Humavindu.
The statement further indicates that the deputy secretary for financial policy in the ministry of finance of Botswana, Boikanyo Mathipa, will be the chairperson of the finance, risk and audit committee, taking over from the deputy director-general of international and regional economic policy in the department of national treasury of South Africa, Boipuso Modise.
