Sanlam Junior Tennis Tournament

THE Sanlam Junior tennis tournament took place last weekend with about 40 children from u8 to u18 participating in singles and doubles matches.

Risto Shikongo won the boys u18 singles title after beating Dantago Gawanab 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

Gawanab however teamed up with Tevin Tate to beat Shikongo and Ronaldo Uirab 6-3, 6-3 in the doubles final.

Gerhard Barnard won the boys u16 singles title after beating Johannes Swartz 6-1, 6-2 in the final. Swartz however teamed up with Diken De Jongh to beat Albertus Brinkmann and Carlos Uirup 6-1, 6-3 in the doubles final.

Agnes Steenkamp beat Eldine van Wyk 6-0, 6-2 in the girls u16 singles final, while Tinashe Mukumba and Tuna Nkandi beat Van Wyk and Tjitji Mbetjiha 6-1, 7-5 in the doubles final.

In the girls u10 category, Raica Lara Coelho emerged as the winner after winning all her matches, while Tjitji Mbetjiha finished as the runner-up.

There were two sections in the u8 category – the red and the orange court which vary according to the court size, racket, balls and net height.

The Orange court was dominated by Abraham Alemu and his runner-up Nathan Chase, while Liam Foster won the boys Red Court category followed by Roelou Lowe. Odycia Karaerua won the Red court for girls, followed by Madison Bergh.

The president of the Namibia Tennis Association, Samson Kaulinge thanked all the players for participating and especially the sponsors, Sanlam for their support towards the tennis community and tournaments.

The next junior tournament will be the Sanlam Junior Tournament for u12’s and u14’s on 15 October. Players are encouraged to register for the tournament.
