Pirates hit 6 against United Stars

Orlando Pirates passed Black Africa into second place on the NPL log after thrashing United Stars 6-2 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates winger Stanley Kamesiepo opened the scoring but Philemon Namble soon equalised for United Stars.

Gustav Isaak restored Pirates’ lead with a fine lob and Kamesiepo scored his second just before halftime after running onto a Warren Neidel pass and slamming it home from the right wing.

Pirates continued to attack after the break with Nicky Musambani breaking down the right wing and crossing to Gerson Hamman who headed home after only three minutes.

With the rain coming down, Pirates went further ahead on 67m when Engelhard Kahua scored from a counterattack, but Nambele scored his second goal for Stars with 10m to go.

Pirates however had the final say 2m before full time when Brian Gurirab ran onto a defence splitting pass and chipped Stars’ outrushing keeper to put the ball into an empty net.

Pirates and Black Africa are now level on 14 points – three points behind log leaders Tigers – but Pirates go second with a slightly better goal aggregate.

Eleven Arrows were desperately unlucky to lose to African Stars in the late match at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday evening.

Arrows took an early lead after a freekick by Volton van Staden, while Wesley Katjiteo made it 2-0 after heading in a Van Staden cross on 32m.

Stars pulled a goal back just before halftime when Chris Katjiukua stabbed in a freekick by Edwin Korukuve at the far post.

Arrows defended admirably in the second half but the match took a twist when Arrows’ keeper Fanuel Meroro was injured in a clash of heads and stretchered off the field. Arrows didnt have a reserve keeper and substitute striker Mapenzi Muwanei had to take over between the posts.

Stars threw everything into attack in the final stages but Arrows managed to hold out until the end of normal time. Stars however struck in the 10 minutes of injury time and drew level through a fine freekick by Bradley Wermann, before Dennis Tjetinda headed in the winner from a corner.

The result saw Stars moving up to fourth place on 13 points while Arrows remain second last on three points.

In Walvis Bay, Blue Waters beat Rundu Chiefs 1-0 through a goal by Hendrik Somaeb on 16m, while Blue Boys and Ramblers drew 1-1 in Swakopmund.
