The National Organisation of Parents in Education (Naope) calls on parents and guardians to take a more active role in their children’s education, saying their involvement should not only start when examination results are poor.
Naope spokesperson Salome Kambala on Monday urged parents to regularly communicate with their children, monitor their schoolwork, attend school meetings and engage teachers and school management throughout the academic year.
The remarks come as pupils returned to school on Monday following a short holiday. Parents are urged to ensure their children return to school on time, prepared and motivated to continue with their studies.
Kambala also urged them to provide emotional, moral and practical support to pupils, especially when they experience academic, behavioural or social challenges.
“Let us not wait for examination results to tell us that our child is struggling or when a pupil’s academic performance or conduct has already deteriorated significantly. Let us be present,” she said.
She called on teachers and schools to involve parents as soon as concerns arise about pupils’ academic performance,attendance, behaviour and general well-being.
“Parents should be regarded as partners in finding solutions. They must walk the journey with their children. Early intervention can make a significant difference,” Kambala said.
She said parents cannot replace teachers, just as teachers cannot replace parents, but stronger cooperation between homes and schools could improve pupils’ chances of success.
She extended appreciation to teachers and education officials for their dedication and commitment to serving children under challenging circumstances.
