Otjomuise residents to get temporary water points

Residents of Bombay Street at Otjomuise will soon have easier access to water after the City of Windhoek approved the installation of two temporary standpipes following an appeal from the community.

The intervention follows a request made on 18 April by community leader Hilda Tseitseimou to Landless People’s Movement councillor Ivan Skrywer, urging the city to bring water closer to the residents.

According to Skrywer, residents have been forced to walk long distances to fetch water from the nearest water point on Istanbul street.

Following the request, the matter was referred to the department of infrastructure, water and technical services, which designed a temporary solution involving the installation of two standpipes along Bombay street.

City officials conducted a site inspection on Monday to introduce the contractor to the project site and assess the working conditions ahead of construction.

“The contractor is expected to submit the final quotation on Wednesday, after which construction is scheduled to start on 13 July,” Skrywer says.

He says work is expected to take about three weeks to complete.

He adds that the standpipes will provide temporary relief to residents while longer-term water infrastructure solutions are considered.
