Opposed To Polygamy

Opposed To Polygamy

ALLOW me to vehemently object to Kabende Kidd’s comments on 17/04/2009 in which he supported the enforcement of polygamy.
My friend, let me tell you why practicing polygamy is WRONG in today’s world.

1. It spreads HIV-AIDS. Fact, as more men are reluctant to go for HIV testing.2. It violates basic human rights of women and young girls. I recently saw a Namibian documentary on the Himba tribe… parents forced their 10-year-old girl to marry 28-year-old man! Why? Instead of sending the child to school? Women’s rights are often oppressed in polygamous relationships and not to mention many children that women bear that men are unable to support!3. Don’t blame the western world for your immorality. In a world of increasing complexities, Namibian youth need to be alert to the ideas that will shape their values and behaviour. What contribution does Namibia want to make to humanity? Do we want to burden the rich world with our polygamy practices, high HIV rate, high unemployment and corruption?Namibian political leaders have become ‘worse-case-scenarios’ by discussing irrelevant issues. Whoever started this polygamy debate in the parliament must ask her/himself these very important questions:What are you thinking? What ideas are driving your life? What goals are pushing you forward into your future and that are eventually a creating better future for Namibians?Namibians wake up and stop dwelling on cultures and traditions that prevent us from developing. Let us grab change by the neck and embrace it because it is full of opportunities. Only then will we develop.Mervin Masiano //AresebLondon, United Kingdom
